Frequently asked questions our Devices

What does it mean if an item is refurbished?

A refurbished item is a used product that has been returned, inspected, repaired where necessary, cleaned and tested before being sold again. It’s not simply a used item passed on as-is. The refurbishment process involves checking that everything works as it should, replacing any faulty components and grading the item honestly based on its cosmetic condition.

For accessories like AirPods or smartwatches, refurbishment typically involves testing the battery and charge case, checking audio output and microphones, verifying connectivity and confirming the device has been factory reset with no data from the previous owner. The end result is an item that functions correctly and is sold with a clear condition grade and warranty rather than a vague "used" description.

Is refurbished the same as second-hand?

Not quite. Second-hand means a product has had a previous owner. Refurbished means it has been through a structured process of inspection, testing and where needed, repair. All refurbished items were second-hand at some point, but not all second-hand items have been properly refurbished.

The practical difference matters most with tech accessories. A pair of AirPods listed as second-hand on a private marketplace may have a degraded battery, a cracked case or connectivity issues that are only discovered after purchase. Pre-owned accessories from a specialist retailer that has tested and graded the item give you the honest condition up front, a warranty and the option to return it if something isn’t right.

Which is better, refurbished or second-hand?

Refurbished is the safer choice in almost every case, and that’s especially true for tech accessories. The value of refurbished lies in the process behind it. A reputable refurbisher will have tested battery health, checked for faults, cleaned the item properly and assigned an honest condition grade. When you buy cheap tech accessories from an untested private listing, you have no way of knowing what condition the battery is actually in or whether the item has any hidden faults.

The trade-off is price. A private second-hand listing will often be cheaper than the same item refurbished from a retailer. Whether that saving is worth it depends on how much risk you are comfortable with. For low-cost items, it may be fine. For AirPods, smartwatches or an Apple Pencil, where the battery and internal components matter significantly to the experience, buying refurbished from a tested and graded source is the better long-term decision.

Is it good to buy refurbished accessories?

Yes, provided you buy from a seller that tests and grades honestly and backs the sale with a warranty. Refurbished accessories offer the same functionality as new at a lower price, and for items like AirPods or smartwatches, the savings can be substantial. Apple AirPods Pro in refurbished condition, for example, can be found at a meaningful discount compared to new while still performing as intended.

The key question to ask before buying any refurbished accessory is whether the battery's health has been checked and stated, and whether the item comes with a warranty. At SellPhone Store, both are standard. We check and state battery condition on all portable accessories and every item is sold with a warranty, so you have the same peace of mind as buying new without paying the new price.

Is it better to buy pre-owned or refurbished accessories?

For tech accessories in particular, refurbished wins. The reason comes down to battery condition and hygiene. Items like AirPods, smartwatches and an Apple Pencil all have batteries that degrade with use and are difficult or impossible to check without testing equipment. A pre-owned listing from a private seller gives you no reliable information about battery health. A properly refurbished item will have the battery's health stated or, where it falls below an acceptable level, the battery will have been replaced.

Hygiene is also a genuine consideration for items like earphones. A refurbished pair of AirPods will have been cleaned before sale. A private pre-owned listing offers no such assurance. For these reasons, refurbished accessories from a specialist retailer are a better purchase than those pre-owned from an unknown private seller, even if the asking price is slightly higher.
